Frequently Asked Questions
1. What makes Pilates different from other types of exercise?
Pilates works to develop core strength; proper alignment; breath control; leaner, longer muscles; and a decompressed spine. Unlike traditional weight- training programs, Pilates focuses on the body as a whole – encouraging the mind and body to work together.
2. How long are the classes and lessons?
55 minutes
3. What is the difference between mat classes and equipment sessions?
Mat work is a series of floor- work exercises, while equipment sessions involve working with springs that provide both support and challenge. It is common to combine both mat and equipment work in your Pilates exercise program.
4. Should I begin with a private session or mat classes?
Ideally, a private session is best because you are working one- on- one and the instructors can tailor the session to your individual needs. Mat classes are taught in a friendly group environment; they require no appointment and offer a great workout. We recommend a combination of both mat classes and private lessons to achieve optimum results.
5. How many times a week should I do Pilates?
We recommend at least two to three times a week in any combination of private lessons, group equipment and mat classes. Pilates is safe to do every day!
6. Is Pilates safe for someone with lower- back problems?
Pilates focuses on strengthening the abdominals, and that, in turn, supports the spine. You will also improve muscle flexibility, increase your range of motion and perfect your posture, thus relieving stress and strain on your spine. Joe Pilates said, “You are as old as your spine is flexible.” If you have lower-back problems, we do recommend starting your Pilates program with a private session to evaluate and design a program for you.
7. Is Pilates a complete workout?
Pilates is a complete workout! You will experience a full- body workout while strengthening and toning your body, increasing your range of motion, and stimulating your mind. We do recommend adding a cardiovascular component to your overall fitness regimen.
8. Can Pilates help me with weight reduction?
Pilates provides resistance training and will change the body by adding strength without bulk. It is not a weight- loss program, but clients often report changing their clothing size – for the better! – as their physique alters.
9. Can I take a group equipment class if I am a beginner?
You should have some Pilates experience before starting a group equipment class. We recommend a private lesson and a few mat classes before moving on to a group equipment class.
10. What should I wear?
Comfortable workout clothing will allow your body to move without restriction. If you wear shorts, please wear long shorts. No shoes are necessary, however you may wear socks.
11. What form of payment do you accept?
Cash, checks, Visa and Master card accepted. To qualify for the discount of multiple lessons or classes you must prepay. Multiple class packages consist of 5 or more lessons and 8 or more mat classes.
12. Where can I park?
There is free parking on Highland Avenue and around the parks.
13. Can I bring my children?
Our facility does not have the capability to provide childcare. If, in an emergency situation, you must bring your child we ask that the child remain in the waiting area only.
14. Can I give Pilates classes as a gift to a friend or family member?
Yes, gift certificates are available.
